99% of internet users in the Philippines are found on Facebook, but most lack the data to check if what they read is misinformation or disinformation. Facebook has referred to the Philippines as “patient zero” when it comes to weaponization of digital platforms. #StopTheSpread is a chatbot developed over 18 months by the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines.
Available for free on Facebook, it’s an educational tool that teaches users how to be vigilant against misinformation. Users can submit a suspicious link to the chatbot, which uses a sophisticated algorithm to run it against six universal guidelines and against known trusted and suspicious sources. They can also submit a link for manual review by NUJP. By learning to spot misinformation, Filipinos can #StopTheSpread.
