Patrick Cabral (best known as Darkgravity on Instagram) is a Multi-disciplinary Designer and Type Artist based in Manila, Philippines. His love for calligraphy started when he was just 11 years old when he took an odd job of writing the names of graduating students’ high school diplomas. This was his first foray into the world of letters and typography.
He then began his career as a web developer and animator and worked for various clients ranging both locally and abroad, from corporate branding, and digital advertising to fashion websites. On February 2014, in collaboration with his wife, they released a mobile app game called Pugo. And was number 1 in the Apple App Store for 2 weeks upon its first release.
But Patrick’s breakthrough in the type world was his collaboration with Jessica Walsh of Sagmeister & Walsh and Graphic Designer Timothy Goodman for 2013’s social experiment “Forty Days of Dating”, which garnered phenomenal success. With his reputation as a typographer and type artist established, he garnered more collaborative work with Sagmeister & Walsh. He also maintains a good working relationship with Hallmark USA, creating special occasion cards based on his illustration and various typography styles. In 2015, he, along with other local type artists, created a pair of flip-flop designs for Havaianas, aptly called Havaianas Filipinas 2015, and was a speaker at the most significant design conference in Asia, Graphika Manila 2016.
