PORTFOLIO: Kring Demetrio

Kring Demetrio is an illustrator based in Cebu, Philippines. Originally from Cagayan de Oro City, she started drawing at a very young age and since has been involved in various artistic endeavors. Lack of  opportunities to study Fine Arts or Illustration led her to read to hone her craft. Eventually, her love for antiquated literature helped her finish a degree in Philosophy.

Despite being an avid participant in gallery shows, her main focus is on illustration; particularly, book illustration. Kring describes her drawing style as mugna-mugna, a Bisaya word which loosely translates ‘to create playfully’. She has adapted this style as a direct result of her self-taught techniques with the pencil in her attempts to imitate line strokes from old masters’ sketches that she found in library books. It has also further evolved with several more contemporary references and influences.

As she had little instruction on technique and composition, most of her ideation comes from a variety of media. She’s inspired by historical ruins, weird museums, strange flora and fauna, death and decay, old cabinets and odd trinkets. Her preferred subjects are inclined to fantasy illustrations; swinging between mythical characters and personal monsters.
